Root Canal Retreatment

During root canal retreatment the endodontist will reopen the infected tooth and remove any filling material that was placed in the root canals during the previous procedure. The endodontist then carefully examines the tooth, looking for additional canals and other sources for the infection. Once the infection is cleaned out, the canals are newly shaped and disinfected, and a new filling is placed. The opening of the tooth is then sealed with a temporary filling. Next you will be asked to see your general dentist who will seal and protect the tooth by placing a more permanent restoration.
